The Clean Slate Without Prejudice Program is a Routine & Boxing program for kids in Redfern.
Launched in 2009 by the Redfern local Koori community in partnership with the Police.
Local Elders and Shane Phillips and local Men’s group chairman Mark Spinks and
Mentors joined with Area commander Luke Freudenstein to create this unique
program.
Redfern, is also known as the “black heart” of Australia and carries enormous significance for Australia’s
Indigenous Aboriginal Population or The First Australians. Well documented as
being the oldest civilization on the planet. Extremely importantly after the
class the next generation of leaders is taught the original Gadigal Language
which was in very serious danger of dying out completely.
Since we (Marina Agustina and I) moved
to Redfern by setting up Social-Laneway Espresso we have been incredibly active within Redfern’s indigenous and non- indigenous local
community. Getting up early three times a week to box with the program 6am-7am
at The National Centre Of Indigenous Excellence is a small price to pay.
Since I grew up
in two Children’s Homes in London over 18 years there are many parallels
between the issues that I faced growing up as the youth face here. Since Byron Arellano invited me to join the team and contribute where I could – I jumped at the idea!
That was four years ago and i’m as passionate now as I was then.
This
collaboration between Tribal Warrior Association, Redfern Police and The Local
Community has been incredibly successful and has won many coveted awards including
Gold at The National Crime Prevention Awards on a state wide and National level - it is in the process or being replicated throughout the country. Aljazeera, The
Australian, SBS, Channel 7 lead some of the positive media stories which is
creating awareness of just how good this program is.
His Excellency
The Governor of NSW, David Hurley, is also a huge supporter.
